The Monona Grove School District and the Village Board met jointly on Dec. 17 to discuss issues of shared concern.
The School Board discussed property it wants to buy for a future
school. The district has an offer to purchase pending on a piece of property located on the west end of the Village along Highway BB. The purchase would need to go to referendum in April 2002. The Village is interested in purchasing some of the property for future use.
The boards also discussed the development of a sports annex to Firemen's Park. The Village purchased the land and is working on fundraising for development and the land purchase price. The school is interested in locating a soccer field in the park for its school sports program.
The School Board updated the Village on its review of current and future building-related needs. All school buildings are in need of some repair. The Cottage Grove Elementary building needs a new HVAC system. Taylor Prairie is at capacity
and may need a new wing. Winnequah Middle School, which was not designed as a middle school,
needs major renovation. The district will decide whether renovation or building of a new middle school is the best solution. In addition, the High School football field bleachers need replacement. Options for this project are under study.
The Village reviewed current and future residential subdivision growth, which will assist the School Board in assessing future classroom needs.
Both the groups found the meeting a constructive way to keep
each other informed on mutual issues. A regular meeting, possibly quarterly, may be in the works.
